10 Must-Visit Royal Forts and Palaces of Rajasthan

Rajasthan—the legendary “Land of Kings”—is a mesmerizing realm where chivalric martial history meets exquisite architectural finesse. Across rugged Aravalli hilltops, gleaming desert sand dunes, and shimmering artificial lakes stand formidable bastions and opulent royal palaces built by Rajput warrior clans over a thousand years. Here is our definitive curator’s guide to the top 10 royal fortresses and palaces of Rajasthan.

1. Amber (Amer) Fort & Palace (Jaipur)

Constructed in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I atop Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles), Amber Fort is celebrated for its seamless blend of Hindu-Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. Highlights include the magnificent Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), where thousands of concave Belgian glass mirrors illuminate the entire room with the light of a single candle, and the ornate Ganesh Pol gateway decorated with delicate vegetable-dye frescoes.

2. Mehrangarh Fort (Jodhpur)

Rising 400 feet perpendicularly above the Blue City of Jodhpur, Mehrangarh was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha. English author Rudyard Kipling described the fortress as “a palace that might have been built by Titans and colored by the morning sun.” The ramparts house heavy antique cannons, seven monumental victory gates (including Loha Pol with the historic handprints of royal satis), and a world-class museum displaying royal palanquins, ivory cribs, and miniature paintings.

3. City Palace & Lake Palace (Udaipur)

Stretching 244 meters along the eastern shore of Lake Pichola, Udaipur’s City Palace is Rajasthan’s largest palace complex. Built over 400 years by successive Mewar Maharanas, its granite and marble pavilions house the Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard) adorned with 5,000 glass mosaic tiles, the Zenana Mahal, and the Crystal Gallery. In the center of the lake floats the pure white Taj Lake Palace, an 18th-century royal summer retreat.

4. Jaisalmer Golden Fort (Sonar Qila)

Founded in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal in the heart of the Great Indian Thar Desert, Sonar Qila is one of the world’s very few remaining “living forts.” Approximately one-quarter of the old city’s population resides within its 99 triple-ringed bastions. The fort is renowned for its 12th-century yellow sandstone Jain temples featuring thousands of intricately hand-carved Tirthankara figures.

5. Kumbhalgarh Fort: The Great Wall of India

Built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, Kumbhalgarh boasts the second longest continuous wall in the world after the Great Wall of China, stretching over 36 kilometers with a thickness broad enough for eight horses to walk abreast. The fort was birthplace of legendary warrior Maharana Pratap and remained practically invincible throughout medieval military history.

6. Chittorgarh Fort: The Citadel of Valor

Sprawling over 700 acres atop a 590-foot hill, Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India and the ultimate symbol of Rajput sacrifice and pride. Key monuments include the 9-story Vijay Stambha (Tower of Victory), the Kirti Stambha (Tower of Fame), and Padmini’s Palace, surrounded by water moats.

7. Umaid Bhawan Palace (Jodhpur)

Constructed between 1928 and 1943 by Maharaja Umaid Singh using golden Chittar sandstone, this 347-room Art Deco monument is one of the world’s largest private royal residences. Today, it is divided into the private residence of the royal family, a heritage museum, and an ultra-luxury palace hotel managed by Taj Hotels.
